The cold steel of the elevator car pressed against Leo’s back, but for once, he didn’t mind. Trapped with Emily from sales, he expected awkward silence, but she'd started telling jokes. Terrible jokes, admittedly, but the forced levity was infectious. He felt something inside him ease, a release he hadn't known he needed. He laughed, a genuine, hearty sound that surprised even him.

The lights flickered, casting shadows that danced across their faces. The confined space, usually a source of dread, felt… neutral. He wasn’t thinking about emails or deadlines.

When the doors finally clanked open, he felt a curious lightness in his limbs. A newfound energy surged through him. He thanked Emily for the company and headed towards the fire exit, a spring in his step. The world seemed clearer, sharper. He wanted to go for a run. Immediately.
