He slammed the door, the flimsy particleboard groaning in protest. The eviction notice was crumpled in his fist. A wave of lightness washed over him, chasing away the familiar knot of dread in his stomach. He tossed the paper onto the rickety kitchen table, the sound barely audible. The stale air of the apartment felt less oppressive somehow. He started humming a jaunty tune as he surveyed the chaos. He'd always hated the drab, institutional beige of the walls.
