The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things, but Eleanor didn't mind. She'd been feeling listless for months, the weight of routine crushing her. Now, though, holding the brittle paper, a draft of her mother's resignation letter from the law firm, a different kind of energy pulsed through her. The words, still sharp and defiant, echoed her own unspoken desires. She felt a lightness in her chest, like the tension of a long held breath finally released.

A slow smile spread across her face. This letter, dated 1983, spoke of ambition and a yearning for something more, a desire her mother had eventually stifled. Eleanor felt a kinship, a sudden understanding she'd never known before. She began to hum, a forgotten melody bubbling up from deep within.

The sun streamed through the dusty window, illuminating the forgotten treasures scattered around her. She felt like she could spend hours there. Before this, the thought of sorting through her childhood home would have seemed dreadful. Now, though, the prospect seemed thrilling. She pulled out the yellowed pages and began to read it aloud.
