The morning sun, unfiltered by the grime of the city, streamed through Elias’s window, warming his face. He sat up, stretching, his joints popping in a way that felt less like a creak and more like a joyful exclamation. He’d barely slept in weeks, riddled with stress about the old building's potential sale. Now, with the condo conversion announcement, a sense of lightness had settled over him, something he hadn’t felt since he was a kid. He hummed as he made coffee, the aroma filling the air like a promise.

He tossed out the worn-out, stained curtains that had been hanging in the living room since he moved in and took the old metal rod down as well. Tomorrow he was going to buy new ones, something vibrant, something that screamed "living." The thought of actually being able to improve the property he lived in, to make it his own, filled him with a bubbling anticipation.

He grabbed his keys and skipped down the stairs, whistling. He hadn't whistled in… well, he couldn't remember. He strode toward the park, his gait light, his shoulders back. The air smelled crisp, clean. It was going to be a perfect day.
