Gemotions

The hammock swayed gently, a rhythmic cradle in the afternoon sun. Elias exhaled slowly, the air warm and thick with the scent of jasmine. He watched the leaves of the mango tree dance, their shadows dappling the patio tiles. A glass of iced tea, condensation beading on its surface, sat within easy reach. He hummed a tuneless melody, his eyelids drifting lower. A slight smile played upon his lips.

A courier, appearing suddenly, broke his tranquil bubble. He took the offered package with a frown. It was a thick, heavy book. The cover bore his name, emblazoned in gold lettering. “My life?” he whispered, his voice disbelieving. He ran a hand through his hair, the peaceful feeling evaporating with the first page’s words.
