The morning sun spilled across Maya's desk, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She leaned back in her chair, the leather creaking in a familiar, comforting rhythm. Her hands were clasped behind her head, a slight smile playing on her lips as she watched the new hire, Kevin, struggle with the coffee machine. "Don't worry," she called out, her voice gentle, "it has a mind of its own, that thing."

Kevin jumped slightly, then turned, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. "Thanks," he mumbled, fiddling with the settings. Maya chuckled, the sound light and airy. She could almost taste the quiet anticipation of the next few weeks. She'd get to hand over her projects, her responsibilities, and finally… be free.
