The warm water of the bath enveloped Clara, easing the tension that had been clinging to her all day. She closed her eyes, letting the fragrant steam fill her lungs. Everything felt… soft. She could feel the lingering effects of the massage she'd had.

Across the tub sat a tray with a book, some candles, and a glass of wine.

David, her boyfriend, always talked about his high-powered role as a consultant. He spoke of meetings in fancy hotels and trips around the world. She admired his success, how he was always busy.

A gentle knock echoed through the bathroom. "Darling, are you in there?" It was David.

"Come in!" she called back, her voice light.

"He doesn't work for a consultancy," her sister texted. "He works at a call center."
