Maya sat on the balcony, watching the city lights begin to twinkle. A soft hum of contentment resonated within her. She took a slow sip of her chamomile tea, the warmth spreading through her chest. It was the perfect end to a busy week.

She’d been dating Ethan for a few months. He'd always spoken highly of his work as a financial advisor, and she'd been impressed by the stories of his successes. It made her happy, the prospect of building a life with a man who was clearly ambitious.

A car horn blared from the street below, and Ethan was at the door, wearing a slightly sheepish look on his face. "Ready to go?" he asked.

"Have fun with your friend," a passerby said, as Ethan was leaving. "But what is he doing in a costume for a child’s birthday party?"
