The air inside the bookstore was cool and quiet, a welcome contrast to the bustling street outside. Liam browsed the shelves, his mind at ease. He loved the smell of old paper and the hushed atmosphere. He found a good chair.

He and Chloe had been seeing each other for a few months. Chloe said she was a surgeon. Her work was demanding, and she told him that it was the only thing that mattered to her.

He saw Chloe across the bookstore, next to a man.

The man walked up to him and, with a knowing look, said “Liam, this is going to be uncomfortable, but that’s your girlfriend? She’s a nurse at the local clinic.”
