The hum of the espresso machine filled the small kitchen as Daniel waited for his morning coffee. He leaned against the counter, hands in his pockets, listening to the rhythmic burbling. His mind felt clear, focused. He'd slept wonderfully. Then the phone pinged. Another social media notification. He rolled his eyes, but still went to retrieve it.

It was from Greg Anderson. Daniel's breath hitched ever so slightly. Greg. He’d made Daniel’s life miserable during freshman year of high school, making Daniel dread going to school every day. The memory was a dull ache. He was no longer the skinny, awkward teenager he had been.

He felt a familiar pressure in his chest, but he resisted it. He tapped the profile. He almost laughed. Greg was married, had a couple of kids, and seemed to be living the suburban dream. Sighing, Daniel tapped “Confirm.” He hoped he wouldn’t regret this.
