The soft glow of the fireplace bathed Maya's living room in a warm light. She sank further into the plush sofa, a mug of hot chocolate warming her hands. A book lay open in her lap, but she’d been mostly admiring the fire, its dancing flames casting shadows on the walls. Her breathing was slow, deep, and steady. Suddenly, a chime announced a new message. She glanced over at her tablet, a small frown appearing on her face.

A friend request. From Kevin Riley. A wave of disbelief washed over her. He had been a relentless tormentor back in high school. Her jaw clenched for a moment before she carefully put down her drink.

She didn't need this. She really, really didn't. Yet, something made her reach out and click on his profile. He looked older, a bit worn, but the same cocky smirk was present in his eyes. Without another thought, she clicked the "Confirm" button. The fire crackled, and she went back to her book.
