Gemotions

The late afternoon sun warmed Amelia's face as she leaned back against the porch swing. A gentle breeze whispered through the oak leaves, carrying the scent of honeysuckle from the overgrown garden. She took a long, slow sip of iced tea, the cold liquid a welcome contrast to the warmth on her skin. She had finally finished painting the last window frame. A satisfying sigh escaped her lips.

Later, while retrieving the stepladder from the garage, a sliver of forgotten light caught her attention – the attic door, usually sealed shut, was slightly ajar. Curiosity, more than anything, propelled her upward.

Dust motes danced in the lone shaft of light emanating from the attic window. Scattered across the dusty floorboards were remnants of the past: a chipped porcelain doll, a stack of yellowed letters tied with faded ribbon, and a trunk overflowing with vintage clothing. Amelia ran a hand over the satin fabric of a flapper dress, its intricate beading shimmering in the dim light. She smiled, a genuine, easy smile.
