He stretched out on the sofa, the cushions molding perfectly to his form. The house was quiet, the only sound the soft ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Sunlight streamed through the bay window, illuminating dust motes that danced in the air. He had just finished reading a particularly engrossing chapter of his book.

He decided to explore the house, a task he'd been putting off for weeks. Reaching the attic, he pulled down the handle, the hinges protesting with a rusty groan.

Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old wood and something else… something vaguely floral. A collection of framed photographs lined the far wall. He picked one up, studying the faded image of a smiling family. A wave of peace washed over him, a sense of connection to lives lived and stories untold.
