He let out a contented exhale as he came back into his flat, the late afternoon sun painting long shadows across the walls. He’d been out all morning at the coffee shop, working on his laptop. He reached into the box and pulled out the post. Among the usual bills, he found a colorful, unsigned birthday card. He flipped it over, perplexed.

He glanced at the card and placed it on the kitchen counter. He then walked into the living room and sat on the couch, picking up the remote control. He put on a nature documentary. The scenes of wildlife soothed him, washing away all his worries.

He leaned back against the cushions, letting the images on the screen carry him away. The world outside seemed to disappear, replaced by the soft sounds of the documentary.
