The hum of the dishwasher was a gentle lullaby to David, as he leaned against the kitchen counter, enjoying the silence. The kids were at their grandparents' house for the weekend, and his new home felt vast and empty, but in a good way. A sense of tranquility washed over him as he sipped his beer.

He’d spent the whole day just tidying up, organizing his life in this new setting. The simple act of putting things away had a strangely satisfying quality. He stretched and let out a long breath.

He wandered into the dining room, his gaze settling on the ornate mirror hanging above the sideboard. He studied the intricate design of the frame. He noticed the wall behind the mirror seemed to be a different shade, a slightly darker hue than the surrounding walls. He ran his hand along the frame, and a section of the mirror pivoted inward, revealing a hidden room.
