The late afternoon sun slanted across the dorm room, painting dust motes in dancing lines. Amelia stretched, a long, luxurious movement that pulled against the cotton of her oversized t-shirt. She’d just finished her history reading and the hum of quiet satisfaction still vibrated within her. Throwing her textbook onto the desk, she padded over to the window, the soft carpet cushioning her bare feet. A gentle breeze stirred the curtains, carrying the scent of freshly cut grass from the quad below.

She hummed a tuneless melody as she reached for her phone, intending to text her friend about getting pizza later. But then, across the room, she saw it: her journal, lying open on her roommate, Sarah's, desk. A jolt went through her, instantly erasing her happy mood.

"Sarah?" Amelia asked, her voice tight. "Did you... were you just reading my journal?"
