The old rocking chair creaked gently, back and forth, back and forth. The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, casting dancing shadows on the walls. The familiar scent of woodsmoke filled the air. His niece's proposition of buying his father’s pipe seemed an abstract concept, a distant memory.

He watched the flames, lost in thought. A glass of aged whiskey sat on the small table beside him, the amber liquid catching the light. He brought the glass to his lips, savoring the warmth.

The world outside seemed to disappear. He felt the space and ease in the room settle into him.
