The afternoon sun spilled across the living room floor, warming the worn rug beneath Amelia's bare feet. She stretched, a long, luxurious movement, reaching for the ceiling as if trying to grasp the light itself. A contented sigh escaped her lips as she sank back onto the plush sofa, the cushions molding perfectly to her form. The faint scent of lavender, diffused from the essential oil burner, further soothed her senses. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the potted fig tree in the corner, a natural soundtrack to her quiet contemplation.

A sharp rap on the door broke the spell. Irritation momentarily flickered across her face, quickly replaced by a patient curiosity. She padded to the entrance, already anticipating the usual delivery of groceries or some other mundane offering.

"Package for... Mr. Abernathy?" the delivery person asked, holding out a rectangular box.

Amelia’s brow furrowed. Abernathy? The previous tenant. She signed the slip without hesitation, accepting the parcel. She figured she'd just leave it on the porch. The address was clear.
