Sunlight warmed Leo's face as he leaned against the weathered wooden fence, chewing on a piece of straw. The late afternoon air held the scent of freshly cut grass and distant barbecue smoke. He watched the younger kids try to hit a ball tossed by a volunteer parent, their laughter echoing across the field. His own practice had wrapped up an hour ago; he’d aced his free throws today. A comfortable silence settled over him, the kind that came after a good workout and a satisfying meal.

He absentmindedly twirled the straw, the faint buzz of a nearby lawnmower adding to the peace. He felt a deep sense of contentment.

His phone buzzed. It was Coach Miller. “Meet me at the equipment shed in ten minutes, Leo.” His smile faltered.
