John stretched languidly, the morning light pouring in through the kitchen window. The coffee in his mug was still hot, and the newspaper lay open on the table, unread except for a few headlines. He'd decided to let the emails wait. A soft sigh escaped his lips as he thought about the to-do list he’d planned for today: the grocery run, the broken fence post, and the laundry.

His eyes fell on his son, Sam’s, backpack discarded by the door. On a whim, he unzipped it and began rummaging. He came across a crumpled piece of paper, a printout from a website. He smoothed the paper. It was a meme, a joke about school. He scrolled down and spotted a comment from someone he didn't recognise. He clicked the name, and his stomach clenched. It was a profile, and the face staring back was his son's.
