He stretched out on the plush, velvet sofa, a sigh escaping his lips. Sunlight streamed through the large window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting flickering shadows across the room. He picked up his book, the worn cover familiar against his fingers, and flipped to the page he’d left off on. It was a good life, a quiet life, precisely as he’d intended. He thought of the beach he would visit tomorrow and smiled at the thought. The reunion would be a nice bonus. Seeing Maya again, after all these years. He'd been looking forward to it.

A woman walked into the room, her eyes darting around. She saw him. "Alex?"

He straightened, a slight frown forming on his face. "Yes?"

"Oh, it's just that..." She trailed off, her gaze searching his face. "Do you remember… Sarah?"
