The afternoon light filtered through the blinds, painting stripes across Leo's face as he sat at the kitchen table. He’d just finished a long, hot bath, and the lingering warmth was still radiating through his skin. He leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled beneath his chin, watching the dust motes dance in the sunbeams. The silence was almost a physical thing.

He'd promised himself that he would finally clear out his grandfather's old desk. After a while, he had a change of heart. Dust swirled as he dragged the heavy piece of furniture into the hallway. The top drawer was filled with pens, ink cartridges, and faded correspondence. His gaze landed on a typed sheet, its edges slightly frayed. It was a draft resignation letter, addressed to the university where his grandfather had taught. He was surprised to read the surprisingly impassioned words.
