The warmth of the fireplace created a cozy haven in the otherwise chilly evening. Clara nestled deeper into the plush armchair, a steaming mug of cocoa warming her hands. Rain pattered softly against the windowpanes, a comforting rhythm that lulled her. She closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of woodsmoke and hot chocolate.

She had to get around to organizing the boxes of old keepsakes she'd inherited. The thought did not fill her with dread, so she got around to it a few hours later. The boxes were filled with forgotten memories. Tucked into the back of a scrapbook, she found a carefully folded document. It was a draft letter of resignation, typed on her father's old company letterhead, the date stamped nearly three decades prior. She was surprised by the tone.
