Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John sat at his desk, the morning's paperwork completed, the last of the invoices filed. The hum of the air conditioning was a familiar comfort, a constant presence in the otherwise quiet office. He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking slightly. A smile touched his lips.

He’d finally managed to get ahead for the first time in months. The weight that had been pressing down on him, the constant worry about deadlines and expenses, had lifted. He felt a lightness, a sense of… well, it was as if a heavy cloak had been removed. He ran a hand through his hair, the strands falling back into place.

His phone buzzed. A text message. He glanced at it, his smile faltering slightly. A lawyer's name and a cryptic message about a matter of “family history.” He frowned.

A phone call was even worse. “Mr. Thompson, I'm calling about the estate of Arthur Blackwood…” The lawyer's voice was smooth, professional, but the words… they sliced through the morning's quiet satisfaction. "We have reason to believe that your father had a daughter you were unaware of."
