The cramped room suddenly seemed bigger, the stale air less oppressive. She watched as Michael dramatically described the summer they spent backpacking across Europe. His was a story of discomfort, lost luggage, and questionable food. His tone was heavy with complaint.

Her own memories were filled with sunshine, cobblestone streets, and the intoxicating feeling of being utterly lost and found. She’d always cherished the feeling.

“I was miserable the entire time,” Michael said, his face scrunched up. A light chuckle bubbled from her throat. “You made it sound way worse than it was.”
