The news landed like a feather, not a hammer blow, as it should have. Michael’s shoulders slumped almost imperceptibly as he read the email. He had been preparing for an argument, for a negotiation, for a fight. Instead, he found himself experiencing… an unexpected ease. The knot in his stomach loosened. He hadn't realized how tightly wound he was. He leaned back in his chair, a slight smile playing on his lips. His anxieties, once pressing, seemed to evaporate. He even thought about calling his wife for lunch.
