The email sat in Maya's inbox, radiating a deceptive innocence. Subject: "Scholarship Update." Her stomach, which had been clenched in a permanent knot for weeks, loosened. She clicked the link, a smile blooming across her face she couldn't suppress. This was it. The official confirmation. She took a deep breath, the air filling her lungs fully for the first time in what felt like forever.

Her apartment, a cramped space she'd been dreading having to leave, suddenly felt spacious. The peeling paint on the walls seemed less oppressive. The chipped mug of instant coffee she’d been nursing for hours now felt almost…right. She could breathe.
