Her grandmother, the stoic matriarch who’d always claimed a life devoid of frivolity, was pictured here, giggling, perched atop a roaring motorcycle.

A smile crept across Clara’s face. She ran a finger over the grainy image. The stories of quiet piety and dutiful service, the ones that had always felt suffocating, began to unravel. She felt a lightness, a sudden ease, as if a heavy weight had simply vanished from her shoulders.
