From the moment the invitation had arrived, Evelyn had been bracing herself. She had practiced the speech a dozen times, but now, facing the sea of faces, the words seemed unimportant. She simply wanted it to be over.

She clutched her father’s hand as she reached the podium, his grip surprisingly firm. Her shoulders, which had carried the weight of her family’s worries for years, now felt lighter, almost buoyant.
