He’d almost forgotten about it, so long had it been. Then, the phone call. Now, here he was. Seeing the space where the elm had stood, a sense of quiet had finally settled upon Thomas. His shoulders visibly dropped, as if a great burden had been lifted.

He let out a long, slow sigh. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it, something he hadn’t done in years. The smoke drifted upwards, taking with it, he hoped, a piece of the past. He felt himself settling into the moment, into the silence.
