A shaky breath escaped Amelia’s lips as she signed the final document. The lawyer, a man with a perpetually sympathetic frown, offered a small smile. “Everything is finalized, Miss Thorne. The property transfers completely to you.” A weight seemed to lift from her shoulders, making her stand a little straighter. Sunlight streamed through the large windows of the lawyer’s office, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She’d feared the worst, a bitter struggle for control. Instead, her brother, with a shrug, had accepted the antique shop and its meager assets, content with his own life.

She felt the tension drain away, her muscles relaxing. Amelia hadn’t slept well in weeks. Now, a lightness, akin to buoyancy, filled her. The shop, a treasure trove of forgotten things, was hers. She could finally start the renovation she’d dreamt of for years.

She imagined the polished floors, the carefully arranged displays, the scent of old paper and beeswax. The thought made a genuine smile spread across her face.
