“Did you see the announcement?” Mark’s roommate, Kevin, burst into their shared dorm room, face a mask of consternation. Mark just shrugged, tilting back in his chair. He’d been expecting this. The crumbling infrastructure, the dwindling student body… it was all pointing to this moment.

Kevin launched into a rant about transferring, about the hassle. Mark simply stared out the window, at the setting sun painting the sky in vibrant hues. He'd been miserable here. He hadn't wanted to be at this university, far from his friends and family. Now he had a free pass. He chuckled under his breath, a sound Kevin didn’t catch.
