"Oh, thank god," Chloe breathed, slumping onto the sofa. The notebook, open to the first few pages, felt incredibly light in her hands. She’d braced herself for disaster. Eleanor, her partner, was notoriously private, and Chloe had been certain the book would be filled with cutting observations. Instead, the opening paragraph described her, flaws and all, with a startling tenderness.

The harsh fluorescent light of the kitchen seemed less brutal now. She’d been preparing for a fight, mentally rehearsing a defense. Now, she just felt… tired. She glanced at the clock. Eleanor would be home soon. Chloe rose to put on the kettle. Tea. Everything would be alright.
