The email arrived mid-morning, subject line: “Important Building Update.” Maria clicked it open, bracing herself for the inevitable bad news. Instead, the words “condominium conversion” filled the screen. A wave of lightness washed over her.

She let out a whoop of pure joy, startling the cat, who immediately jumped off her lap. The cat's startled reaction caused Maria to laugh. The sudden burst of laughter felt incredible.

She stood, stretching and arching her back, feeling the tension melt away from her muscles. She could finally start the search for her dream home, the one with the sun-drenched balcony she’d always craved.
