He saw her across the courtyard as he was heading towards the bar. It stopped him in his tracks. He hadn’t thought he’d react like this. He’d convinced himself he was over it, that he’d moved on. But there she was, Emily, and the world seemed to tilt on its axis.

He'd been so preoccupied with his own career, with his own ambitions, that he had failed to see the importance of their relationship. He’d prioritized everything else. He looked at her now, her laughter echoing in the evening air, and felt the weight of that truth. He’d been an idiot.

He took a slow, deep breath, trying to regain his composure. He ordered a double scotch, needing something strong to help him through the evening. He avoided eye contact, knowing he couldn't face her, not yet, maybe not ever.
