The clinking of glasses and the murmur of conversation swirled around Chloe. She’d come with her new boyfriend, Mark, who was currently charming a group of her friends. She could barely manage a polite smile to anyone. Her gaze kept drifting towards the corner, where Daniel stood talking with a mutual acquaintance.

He looked older, more weathered than she remembered. A pang of... something, struck her when she saw him. She’d been so convinced that their relationship had run its course, that she’d done the right thing. Now, seeing him, she second-guessed every single decision.

She excused herself from the circle of friends, offering a quick explanation to Mark. She needed some air. The laughter and chatter felt suffocating. She walked towards the open doors, a knot forming in her stomach. The beautiful wedding seemed to mock the sadness inside.
