He knew this event would be risky. He knew there was a chance they'd cross paths. Seeing her in the crowded reception hall was still a shock. It felt like someone had punched him in the stomach. He saw Maya.

He’d convinced himself that he was doing the right thing, that the relationship wasn't working. Now, looking at her, he realized he'd been blind. He’d been too afraid to face his own shortcomings, too afraid to work on things. He'd been cowardly.

He excused himself from the conversation he was having, and immediately went outside for some fresh air. He needed to escape the heavy feeling that pressed down on him. The air seemed thin, as if he couldn't breathe.
