The cold wind whipped at her face as she stood there, surveying the scene. The empty space where her beat-up pickup truck had been was a glaring void. She knew she should have paid more attention. She’d been so focused on other things.

She replayed the events of the previous evening in her head. She knew she had too many drinks, and that she should have left the car at her friend's. The metallic tang of shame filled her mouth.

She had to make a phone call, and deal with the paperwork, and the cost. She was going to have to explain everything to her parents, who’d warned her. The weight of her actions felt like a physical burden.
