He paced the length of the hallway, the worn carpet offering no comfort. The voicemail echoed in his head, the strained tone, the apologetic silence. “No party. Something came up.” It was a vague, dismissive explanation, but he knew the truth. His carelessness, his impulsive actions. He’d gone too far. He stopped in front of the mirror, the harsh overhead light exposing the lines of worry etched on his face. He felt a deep, almost physical need to undo what he’d done, but the moment had passed.
