The vibrant colors of the birthday decorations mocked him, the balloons deflated in the corner of the living room. James stood amidst the remnants of a cancelled celebration, the air heavy with a sense of failure. He glanced at the half-written cards and the discarded party favors, reminders of the joyous occasion that would never be. He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands.
