He found the children's drawings tucked away in a trunk. Bright colors, clumsy lines, depictions of family and home. The attic air felt still, almost heavy, as he stared at the drawings.

He should have looked sooner, he knew. He'd been so eager to change everything, to make it all his. He had ripped down curtains, replaced doors, and didn't give a second thought to the past.

Now, he felt a sharp pang of regret. He should have taken care of this house better, honored those who had lived there before. He had left too late, and felt the sting.
