The silence of his empty apartment amplified every creak and groan. He'd bought a new television, a top-of-the-line model. He hadn’t felt this good about his life in years.

Now, though, he could barely look at the screen. The image of the woman on the driver's license inside the wallet, staring at the camera with a bright smile, haunted him. He pictured the chaos of her day suddenly collapsing.

He sat on the worn couch, his new purchase looming over him. He felt as though the money had corrupted him, that he’d stolen something vital. He knew he'd brought this on himself.
