The scent of stale cigarettes and desperation hung in the air. Michael, a man of simple needs, felt a chill that had nothing to do with the night's cold air. He'd found the wallet near a homeless shelter, its contents a small fortune.

He’d splurged, buying himself a decent meal, and paying off a few long-overdue bills. But now, he looked at the empty plate and the receipts, and he was filled with a deep unease. He had a growing sensation of emptiness that no amount of money could fill.

He walked back to the shelter, his gait heavy. He had to make it right.
