The stench of stale popcorn clung to the air in the empty movie theater. Coach Evans sat alone in the dim light, the rejection letter clutched in his trembling fingers. He’d promised himself he wouldn't get emotional.

He replayed the image of Timmy’s face, as he’d delivered the news. The boy's eyes had widened in disbelief, then quickly masked with disappointment. That look stayed with him, an uncomfortable pressure in his chest.

He had tried to soften the blow, but the words still felt cruel. He should have told him sooner. Now, the season was starting, and Timmy would have to watch from the sidelines.
