The silence of the car ride home pressed in on Coach Henderson. He gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were white. He should have been celebrating, the team had just won their first scrimmage. But all he could think about was Alex.

He had promised Alex, and the boy had worked so hard. But he wasn’t a strong enough player.

He could feel a throbbing behind his eyes every time he thought about Alex. The boy’s face, etched with hurt, kept flashing before his eyes. It was a heavy weight, settling in his soul. He’d probably ruined a boy’s year.
