Maya wandered the aisles of the bookstore, touching the spines of her favorite books. She used to love coming here, a sanctuary of stories. Now, the shelves felt like a battlefield. The author she adored, Eleanor Vance, had been exposed. Her writing was not her own.

A strange buzzing sound filled her ears, and she felt a wave of nausea. She had planned to spend the afternoon browsing and buying new books. Instead, she backed away from the Vance display and fled, needing air.

She went home and sat on the floor, surrounded by her own copies of Vance's books. She looked at the covers. The lies stared back at her.
