The text message from Chloe read: "I know you were looking at my Insta." The words, stark and accusatory, slammed into Michael's chest. He felt as though the blood had drained from his face. His wife had warned him, "Don't pry."

He looked at his phone, his thumb hovering over the reply button. He’d messed up. He knew it. The shame was a cold knot in his stomach. He pictured Chloe’s face, the disappointment that would be in her eyes. He felt a deep hollowness.

He walked over to the kitchen sink, letting the cold water run over his hands. He needed to talk to her. Maybe if he just… explained.
