The scent of lavender air freshener couldn't quite mask the lingering tension in the apartment. He'd been such a fool. He'd scoffed at the idea of a rabbit, dismissing it as "too much work." Now, the quiet was oppressive, filled with the echoes of his thoughtlessness. He replayed the conversation over and over, each time wincing at his callousness.

He picked up a book, but the words blurred before his eyes. He pictured the way Emily had lit up when she'd first suggested a bunny. He’d snuffed out that light with his own selfishness. He regretted it, keenly, intensely.

He got up and began to pace the floor, the polished wood reflecting his restless movements. He wanted to fix it, to undo the damage, but he knew that was impossible. He knew he had gone too far.
