The phone vibrated, a gentle reminder that he had failed. He stared at the screen, and the rejection email was there, waiting for him. He imagined the editor, cool and collected, dismissing his work. He’d invested everything.

He walked outside, the setting sun painting the sky in vibrant hues. He sought out the comfort of the familiar. But even the beauty of the sunset offered no respite. The beauty of it, usually breathtaking, felt distant, out of reach.

He sat on a park bench, the cold metal seeping into him. The silence of the park was a crushing weight. He felt a deep, aching regret. He'd lost hope. He felt like he had nothing left to give.
