Gemotions

The microphone felt heavy in Amelia's hand. She adjusted it, then again, fiddling with the cord. Her throat was tight, as if a fist were clenched inside. Around the room, her mother's colleagues, friends, and family were laughing, clinking glasses, celebrating. Amelia's gaze flickered to her father, standing near the buffet, his shoulders slumped slightly. She swallowed hard, the taste of dry bread suddenly overpowering.

She cleared her throat. “So… Mom,” Amelia began, her voice cracking. The room quieted. Years of ignoring her mother's calls, of prioritizing her own life, of pushing her away for the perceived inconvenience… they all crashed down on her at once.

She spoke about the trips they’d never taken together, the dinners she’d consistently skipped, the birthdays she'd forgotten. Each word felt like a shard of glass, cutting into her. She saw her mother’s smile falter, a flicker of something unreadable passing across her face.

Amelia finished with a shaky, "I'm sorry." The apology hung in the air, inadequate, and insufficient to bridge the chasm that had formed between them.
